The wider Sipaliwini region is characterized by extensive rainforest and waterways. SamCore's development planning recognizes the importance of responsible environmental management as the project advances.
Environmental responsibility
Planning aims to limit footprint, protect surrounding forest and manage waste and emissions in line with applicable Suriname requirements.
Responsible land use
Disturbed area is intended to be kept to what the work requires, with land use planned in stages rather than cleared in advance.
Water stewardship
Protecting waterways is a baseline commitment. Site plans are being designed to manage runoff, control sediment and safeguard downstream users.
Environmental assessment & compliance
Environmental assessment and permitting processes will be carried out under applicable Suriname law. No environmental approval is represented as granted.
Rehabilitation & restoration planning
Rehabilitation planning is intended to form part of project design, so that restoration is funded and scheduled rather than deferred.
Worker safety
Safety is to be designed into procedures, training and equipment selection before any field activity begins.
Community engagement
Village leadership and communities throughout the areas concerned are to be engaged early and consistently, with information shared in plain terms.
Long-term development
Local employment, training and supplier development are intended to create benefit that outlasts any single phase of the project.
